For the first time, five new questions on language of instruction were asked on both the short-form and long-form questionnaires of the 2021 census.
The main objective was to obtain the number of children eligible for minority official language education according to the criteria set out in Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
For the purposes of the federal census, minority official language means English in Quebec and French in the rest of the country.
